Why Should You Have Your Heat Pumps Serviced & Maintained Regularly?
Regular servicing keeps your heat pump running at its best. Here is what is at stake if you do not.
Improving the heat pump's efficiency
Like all machinery, a heat pump’s efficiency is directly tied to the condition of its many moving parts. Heat pumps are known for being energy efficient, but a poorly maintained unit can perform 10 to 20 percent worse, meaning you pay more for the same output.
Enhancing your comfort
Heat pumps improve comfort in two ways: temperature and indoor air quality. They automatically maintain optimal temperatures inside your home, so it’s never sweltering or freezing whatever the season, and they can dehumidify and filter allergens to make breathing easier. Regular upkeep ensures your household keeps reaping these benefits.
Reduces health risk
Air filters are one of a heat pump’s central components, catching allergens and pollutants before they enter your home. Without regular servicing, filters can become clogged with contaminants like dust and mould spores, which bogs down the system and keeps hazardous particles recirculating in your indoor air.
Longer life cycle with less risk of system breakdown
Heat pumps, like all HVAC systems, are an investment in health and comfort, relying on an intricate network of tubes, filters and electrical components. Regular servicing lets your heat pump run without a hitch for far longer, saving you from costly repairs and replacements down the line, and in offices or commercial premises it prevents unnecessary closures and keeps staff and customers safe.
Maintaining the unit's warranty
Heat pumps typically come with a two to three year warranty, and some can run for a decade. These warranties don’t absolve you of responsibility though. Most manufacturers require regular servicing by certified technicians to keep the warranty valid throughout its coverage period.
How Heat Pumps Work, and What to Expect From Us
A closer look at the technology, and the process we follow from first call to completed installation.
How Do Heat Pumps Work?
Heat pumps are essentially air conditioners that push out warm air instead of cold. They take heat from an external source, such as air or the ground, but unlike air conditioners they can work both ways, pushing heat into a building during colder months or pulling it out on particularly hot days. A heat pump is built from five key components: refrigerant, condenser, expansion valve, evaporator and compressor. Refrigerant flows through the system as the vehicle for heat, pumped by the compressor, and passes through the condenser where it absorbs heat. The evaporator coil then releases that heat inside the unit, warming the air that’s pushed out into the room.
An Exemplary Service that Puts Your Safety First
We understand that installing a heat pump system is a significant investment for your home or business, which is why every project starts with an extensive phone consultation covering budgets, funding and exact site requirements. A site survey follows the initial call, during which our engineers gather data to design a system and installation plan specific to your property, usually spending half a day collecting all the relevant information. Installation proceeds once the design is finalised and typically takes 5 to 8 days. Once complete, owners are handed all MCS and commissioning paperwork, shown how to use the system, and talked through applying for Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments. For service or maintenance work, our engineers check and clean the entire heat pump system and assess its performance, from controls to water quality, before providing a detailed report. A full system service typically takes 2 to 3 hours. Our REFCOM registered heating engineers provide end to end support, and our work is measured against the most stringent criteria for quality and safety, certified to OFTEC, Gas Safe and SafeContractor standards.
Heat Pump FAQs
Answers to the questions we hear most from homeowners and businesses considering a heat pump.
What is a Geothermal Pump?
Geothermal pumps take their heat from the earth. These systems are generally more powerful, efficient and reliable than air source alternatives, because underground heat energy is far more consistent than ambient air, which is more thermally volatile as the seasons change. Some ground-based systems can even generate enough energy to double as a water heater. The main drawback is a higher upfront cost: geothermal pumps are sophisticated systems, and utility providers typically have to drill anywhere from 4 to 100 metres underground, requiring specialised tools for proper installation.
What are Air Source Pumps?
Air source pumps are smaller, sleeker machines usually installed outside buildings and homes. They’re the cheapest type of heat pump, which makes them popular with homeowners, but that convenience comes with a tradeoff in efficiency: most air source units are only around half as efficient as ground-based pumps. Being located outside and exposed to the elements also makes them more prone to damage and in need of more frequent maintenance.
Why are heat pumps important in commercial spaces?
Thermal comfort should be a given in any workplace, and is actually required by law. In reality, a great number of uncomfortable employees waste a collective 2% of office hours every day due to poor temperature control at work, costing the economy an estimated £13 billion a year. An efficient heat pump maintains a steady temperature, reducing energy bills and increasing workforce productivity. Heat pumps are the standard in many developed countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, Canada and the United States, and the UK government offers several programmes to encourage their use, including the Renewable Heat Incentive. Heat pumps are also highly customised systems with no one-size-fits-all solution, so professional installation prevents costly mis-fitted replacements.
Can I DIY my heat pump's maintenance?
There are a few minor fixes that someone comfortable with home repairs can handle. Changing filters on air source heat pumps is typically a matter of swapping them out, and you can dust around the unit to reduce build-up inside the system. However, these machines house many complicated mechanisms, and electrical components can be extremely dangerous. Attempting repairs when you’re not qualified can lead to irreparable damage or serious injury.
How often should a heat pump be serviced?
Twice a year is recommended. It’s best to book technicians during more temperate seasons, before your heat pump has to work hard cooling or heating your premises once conditions turn extreme. The last thing you want is a malfunctioning heat pump leaving you cold in winter or stranded in the heat of summer.
What maintenance tips do you recommend I do for my heat pumps?
Switching filters regularly keeps your system running at peak efficiency for longer. Filters typically need changing every two to three months, though households or buildings with pets, or those in busy, dusty urban areas, may need to change them more often. Cleaning the outdoor unit once a month is also good practice, as it stops debris building up and obstructing airflow.
How long do heat pumps last on average?
On average, a heat pump should last around 15 years, though the lifespan of your system also depends on factors such as the location of your premises, how often it’s used, and how well it’s maintained. Done right, a well-maintained heat pump’s life expectancy can stretch to 20 years.
My building is old. Can I still have a heat pump installed?
Yes, any building can have a heat pump installed. What varies is the complexity of the installation. Heavier renovations may be needed to route pipework in a way that won’t damage the building, though some older buildings are actually well suited to heat pumps thanks to the insulating properties of their brickwork, which causes them to heat up and cool down more slowly. Less volatile thermal conditions mean a heat pump can run more efficiently at constant temperatures.
How much noise do heat pumps make?
Some heat pumps can be as noisy as 60dB, about as loud as a normal conversation. Modern machines have sound-dampening features that can bring this down to as low as 40dB, good news for owners in residential areas, where the UK government has set a maximum of 45dB of noise when a heat pump is located within a metre of a neighbouring property’s window.
